Recertification Requirements

CARN Requirements

In order to recertify, one will need 60 points of credit as well as verification of a minimum of 2,000 hours (1 year) of addictions nursing experience as a registered nurse in a staff, administrative, teaching, consultation, private practice, counseling, or research capacity within the past four years. Download CARN re-certification application

Late CARN Requirements

  1. Certification renewal applications will be accepted up to two years after the certification has expired, with a $100 fee in addition to the basic recertification fee.
  2. The ability to practice may be impacted if the state or workplace requires certification to practice and the certification has expired. The responsibility lies with registered nurse to maintain certification.
  3. Once the certification has expired, the credential can no longer be used.
  4. The credential may be reinstated only under the following conditions:
    • successful recertification by application within the 2-year period after the certification has expired (all requirements must be fulfilled prior to the expiration of the 2-year period); or
    • recertification by examination. 

CARN-AP Requirements

In order to recertify, one will need 80 points of credit as well as verification of a minimum of 1,200 hours of advanced practice nursing related to primary, secondary, or tertiary prevention of addictions within the past four years. Practice can include managing, supervising, educating, consulting, ordirecting other persons to help achieve patient goals related to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. $100 late fee will apply to all recertification fees if not submitted by the appropriate deadline.

Recertification Deadlines

Recertification is conducted twice a year. Applications are due June 30 and December 31 for the respective testing periods.
