Research Grant Guidelines



Purpose

A.  The purpose of the award is to stimulate research that has direct or indirect impact on addictions nursing. No indirect cost is included in the award. Guidelines

  1. One award of up to $1,000 will be given.
  2. Funds will be released following documentation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval or exemption.
  3. Recipients of the IntNSA Research Grant must complete their research and request
    the award monies within two years from the time the award is granted. 
  4. An individual may receive only one award in a two-year period as a Principal Investigator.
  5. All applications must be received by the application deadline—August 1, 2008.


Format

  1. Proposal format will follow the guidelines set out in the Public Health Service 398 form used for National Institute of Health (NIH) grants but in an abbreviated form (5 page limit).   2. A face page that identifies all investigators must accompany all applications. A title page without information related to the applicants must be included. The rest of the pages of the application must have no information related to the identity of the researchers.
  3. Format guidelines: Investigators must use single spacing, no less than 11 point size (15 characters per inch); page limitations for each section are recommendations only but the body of the proposal (section d below) cannot exceed 5, single-spaced pages excluding references, and supporting materials. Do not include any investigator identification except on the face page. Place a header at the top of each page using the first 20 characters of the title of the proposal.
    1. Face Page: Title with 56 characters including spaces or less. All investigators name, rank and organization.
    2. Cover page: Title only
    3. Abstract: 300 words or less
    4. Proposal (no more than 5 pages)
      1. Specific Aims: 1 page
      2. Background and Significance: 1 page
      3. Research Design and Methods: 2 pages
      4. Sequence and Timetable: 0.5 page
      5. Human Subjects: 0.5 page; we do not expect proposals to have Institutional Review Board Approval at the time of the review. However, IRB approval must be provided before funds are released.
    5. Appendices: As needed to support proposal
    6. References:
    7. Budget: Dollars requested and justification for how the funds will be spent


Process

  1. Six copies of the proposal are submitted to the International Nurses Society on Addictions headquarters by the specified deadline for distribution to the Research Committee reviewers.
  2. The Research Committee, with additional invited reviewers as needed, will review and score proposals using NIH priority scoring methods.
  3. The Chair of the Research committee will send forth the committee recommendations to the president of IntNSA along with comments and critique from the reviewers.
  4. All applicants will be notified by the president of the outcome of the proposal review including their priority score and a summary of the reviewers' comments.
  5. Final notification of award will be announced at the annual IntNSA conference.


Selection Criteria

  1. Scientific Merit
  2. Potential for the research to have a direct or indirect impact on addictions nursing.
  3. Feasibility of completing the project in the stated time frame.
  4. With all criteria being equal, preference will be given to IntNSA members.
