There has been a significant increase in manufacturing, availability, and use of novel psychoactive substances (NPS). The purpose of this presentation is to give an overview of challenges associated with prevention, recognition, and treatment of the most common classes of NPS. Understanding NPS chemistry and pharmacology is essential for recognizing clinical presentations and for providing safe and effective treatment. This presentation provides education to enhance knowledge necessary to recognize signs and symptoms of the most common classes of NPS and to treat patients who use NPS. Emphasis is placed on prevention, identification, safety planning, and use of evidence-based treatment options.

Mihaela Fletcher, DNP, MSN, PMHNP, FNP, CNE, CARN-NP, FIAAN, graduated from Duke University, UNC at Chapel Hill, ECU, and Grambling State University. She works in a NC DHHS state-operated hospital, treating patients with psychiatric, addiction, and medical disorders. She is a peer reviewer for professional nursing organizations. She is an Affiliate Associate Professor at ECU Health Brody Schol of Medicine, Adjunct Faculty at Walden University College of Nursing, and a former Clinical Associate Professor at ECU College of Nursing. She trains NP students, medical students, and physician assistant students. She integrates clinical practice, student education, and professional service.
