Substance use disorder affects every community and presents unique challenges in healthcare settings. Yet addiction stigma, training gaps, and systemic barriers continue to shape how care is delivered. To address this, Shatterproof developed a dynamic new learning experience for healthcare professionals. A Provider’s Pathway to Supporting Patients with Substance Use Disorder offers an in-person educational session designed to change attitudes and beliefs of providers towards their patients who use substances or have SUD. The curriculum combines facilitated instruction, guided discussion, and case-based learning to build a shared foundation around SUD, addiction stigma, and compassionate care. Participants will engage with their peers and facilitators to learn, reflect, and practice new skills that they can apply to their own clinical environments. This approach supports workforce development, strengthens person-centered care, and helps providers translate learning into action across teams and systems.

Guy Felicella is an international public speaker and advocate for drug policy reform. Overcoming a two-decade substance use disorder, he has turned his life around after years of homelessness, gang involvement, and surviving overdoses in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Now, Guy passionately promotes harm reduction, trauma therapy, and faster access to treatment, using his story of resilience and recovery to inspire others and push for compassionate drug policies and addiction support.

Dr. Furman worked for the state of Washington for 45 years as a recreation therapist, psychiatric childcare counselor, and registered nurse. He earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Washington and a PhD in health administration from Western Kennedy University – along with national certifications in psychiatric nursing, infection control, and occupational health nursing. Service positions include the boards of the Washington State Public Health Association, Washington State Healthcare Safety Council, Washington State Association of Occupational Health Nursing, and the Northwest Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology.
In his role with the Washington State OSHA program, he has been a major driver of occupational safety and health policy – authoring state regulation on violence in healthcare, protection of personal healthcare information, outdoor heat exposure, and exposure to hazardous medications – just to name a few. Prior to retiring from state service Dr. Furman served as the director of the Washington State Health Professionals Program – the state approved substance use monitoring program for nurses. He was a long-time board member of the National Organization of Alternative Programs and chaired its research committee, helping to connect nursing with addiction science.
Dr Adam Searby is an associate professor at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. He has worked clinically in mental health and addiction settings, including in Melbourne’s first Medically Supervised Injecting Room. Adam has completed research into the addiction nursing workforce in Australia and New Zealand, including the challenges faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a sustainable addiction nursing workforce, and the integration of mental health and addiction treatment services, and research exploring alcohol consumption among Australian nurses. Adam is the immediate past president of the Drug and Alcohol Nurses of Australasia (DANA), and has recently assumed the role of Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Addiction Nursing.
